Life as a Reader

Recently the teachers at Chets Creek were challenged to create a weekly blog post about a common subject. The first post is to describe our lives as readers. As you know, Mrs. Morris and I are sisters and we grew up together. You may find it interesting that she ALWAYS had a book in her hand and I rarely read for pleasure. She can give you the summary for every Paula Danzinger, Beverly Cleary, and Judy Blume book ever written. She read on long car trips while I listened to my Walkman. Ironically, I turned into a reading teacher and she developed a love for math and science. While in college I discovered the amazing world of children's picture books. As a new teacher I attended the International Reading Association Conference in Orlando and had the opportunity to meet many authors and illustrators. Since then I've read countless picture and chapter books and spent a small fortune stocking the shelves of our classroom library.

As adults, Mrs. Morris and I share fiction books. A common favorite author of ours is Jodi Picoult. Mrs. Morris enjoys books by Nora Roberts and Danielle Steele. I've read everything Mary Higgins Clark has ever written. We also read a lot of non-fiction books - particularly for school and we both still have subscriptions to the Florida Times Union.

Earlier this year we asked our students if they had parents that were readers. It's so important to model this behavior for your children. We asked if they had any magazine subscriptions delivered to their homes and if their parents read on-line. We'd love to hear from you. Please comment if you have a favorite author or genre. Everyone should live their life as a reader!

I love to read and grew up with a bookshelf full of books. I now have a full bookshelf for my family with lots of books for all ages. I have been enjoying Nicholas Sparks books and a few other authors that I enjoy.

We are definitely a family of readers! I can't picture my Dad without his nose in a book and my Mom always told me you can never have enough books. I was an English major in college and enjoyed all the genres. My husband loves the library and enjoys taking the kids to the library. We love all kinds of books and love to read them together!!

I, like you, was not an avid reader as a child. I didn't develop my love of reading until after college. Jodi Picoult, Kristin Hannah, Barbara Delinsky, Diane Chamberlain, and Elin Hilderbrand are my favorites. But, I've read everything they've written, so I'm in search of another favorite author. I just read two great books, one I passed to Susan and the other to dayle. I'm pass them your way when they are done.

My favorite author is Francine Rivers. Reading one of her books requires blocking off the whole weekend, because once I start reading, I don't stop until it's done. I didn't enjoy reading as a child, but now I'm constantly looking for the next book I'm going to read. Sometimes I even have two or three books going at the same time. I'm blessed that my children already enjoy reading.

I am a four year old VPK preschool teacher. I enjoy reading to my class. As a group we all enjoy reading from the authors of Eric Carle and Mo Willems and many more. I also enjoy reading with Courtney. Something her older brother Daniel and I did was that I would read a page and he would read a page. That tradition has carried on with she and I...and sometimes, Daniel will join us. :) Michelle Eierman

My Favorite Author is:
Jeff Kinney
He wrote Diary of a Whimpy Kid.

To date, four Wimpy Kid books have been released, plus a do-it-yourself book. At least one additional book is planned to be released.

The series has 40 million copies in print world wide as of 2010 and was developed into a feature film, for which Kinney also served as an executive producer.

In 2009, Kinney was named one of Time magazine's 100 "Most Influential People" in the world.

I really like Jeff Kinney and reading his Diary of a Wimpy Kid "The Last Straw".

I just loved this post and it also made me laugh. I also have a younger sister who never read as a child. I was always the one that had a book. She grew up to be a Media Specialist! It ALWAYS makes me laugh when I think of how she hated to read! You just never know!

What a sweet story of you and your sister growing up! I enjoyed hearing about your reading lives as children as much as I enjoyed the adorable photo! I'm with you on Jodi Picoult and Nora Roberts is an all time favorite. I actually got to meet her in person at one of her lectures and had the opportunity to ask her what type of books she liked to read. I took a photo with her and keep it in my office. :) Thanks for sharing your reading story and for joining the challenge!
